1062 words today. My word count is slightly lower today… I bought a standing desk, and it arrived. I spent the afternoon putting it together. It’s definitely an investment in my health, so a few thousand words for the day is a smart sacrifice! (Picture below of my setup. Still have a lot to add.) This has prompted me to rearrange and redesign my entire studio, which has been about 1 year since I did that. 2021 is the perfect time to do this.

The one thing I hated about my old desk was that the sides weren’t flat, so I couldn’t attach things to it. Now, I have some major benefits I can start reaping as early as next week once equipment arrives:

#1: I can attach a microphone boom arm and shock mount to the desk, which means I can use my new XLR microphone and audio interface to record The Writer’s Journey, Writing Tip of the Day, and podcast interviews. This means I can leave my Blue Yeti attached my bike for the time being. I can also easily transport the XLR mic to my audio booth when it’s time to record audiobooks as well.

#2: It also means that my audio quality across the board should see a major upgrade very soon, assuming I can get everything working…

#3: It also means I can dictate standing up at my desk now, too, which means I’ll REALLY be able to fly starting at the end of this week!!! If I wanted, dictation can now be my primary writing method. I’m not saying it will be, but it’s good to have options.

If anyone is interested, I bought an Uplift Desk. Fast shipping, very, very easy to put together (even for a technically-challenged guy like me), and high quality. Took me about an hour to put together, but more for cable management/wire management stuff. Still looks pretty terrible down below. I don’t have the IQ to figure this stuff out LOL.

I also bought a new monitor which is double the size of my old one. I put Scrivener on it in the photo below so you can see the real estate I’m working with now. Honestly, I wanted two…but the desk isn’t big enough.

WHY THE HEALTH INVESTMENTS

Because I’ve put them off for too long, honestly. I’ve been such a productivity demon that I don’t want to be paying for that several years from now. I already have minor back pain that flares up from time to time, and my old desk didn’t help with that—in fact, it contributed to it more than I like to acknowledge.

This stuff wasn’t cheap, but I’ve been saving up for the last few years so that made it easier.

Also, I was able to claim the desk as a tax benefit, too, which will help reduce my tax liability this year. Not sexy, but good for those of you who might want to know this. New computer (and accessories), audiovisual equipment, desk, and other stuff can all be claimed at tax time.

OTHER NEWS…

In other news, I’m still waiting on my TED talk application…they extended the notification date to 1/4/21, which is Monday. I’ll know if it’s a yes or a no then. Yikes…

Also, no bike today. Probably not a bad thing as my body needs a rest. We’ll pick back up tomorrow.
