2902 words today. I fell short of the 3500 word goal I wanted to hit today, but it’s not bad for the first official day back on the horse! It always takes a couple of days to get back to regular speed after I’ve missed for a few days.
No bike today but I’ll start that up again tomorrow now that I’ve got momentum.
I got a late start writing just due to the way the cookie crumbled today, so I made up for it trying something different.
I dictated at my standing desk using the mic on my boom arm.
#1: I dictated sitting down.
#2: I dictated standing up.
#3: I dictated walking around. Turns out I can get around 10-12 feet from my mic with no loss in quality, which means I can walk all over my basement and talk the story out.
My condenser mic is very sensitive. In fact, I don’t even need to have it near my mouth. I can have it in its normal resting position when I stop for the night and it will still pick up my words crystal clear.
So I dictated for about 2 hours, only stopping for dinner and a break to walk the dog.
This was just my productivity for one part of one evening. If I can get a good run at the day, dictating early morning and at breaks throughout the day, I’ll hit crazy word counts without trying. Looking forward to that.
I still think my dictation is slow compared to most. I speak a few sentences, stop, a few sentences, stop, etc. But it’s mostly clean so I can’t complain. There’s no doubt that my count would have been half of the current amount if I had written by hand. That’s for sure. So dictation helped me double my word count today and helped me build momentum.
I promised my alpha readers I’d have the book to them this week, so failure isn’t an option. My cover designer will also be sending me the illustration of my cover sometime this week. I’d like to be done or very close to done when it arrives, but we’ll see.
At my current pace, I’ll be done with the novel by end of the week. That means I can start a new book over the three-day weekend, which is IDEAL. I’m not taking a break between books. Law school starts on Feb 1st so I want to get as much mileage out of January as I can. My life will be nuts for six weeks after that…I have a 1200 page textbook to plow through…
Anyhoo, I hope I’m setting some kind of example by getting back on the horse today. There’s nothing to it but to do it. As I said yesterday, don’t worry about missing days. The law of averages always works in your favor.
