I did two podcast interviews today. One was on the Lawyerpreneur Podcast with Jeremy Richter. The audience is lawyers who want to be more entrepreneurial. Very fun to talk to that crowd. We talked about productivity and creative entrepreneurship.
Second podcast I did was The Hidden Falls Media Experience with Alex Vonderhaar. Alex has a background in neuroscience and he uses that to help clients with their marketing. (WHOA!). We talked about marketing, copywriting, email marketing, and the business of being a creative. A much different interview than I’ve done in the past, so definitely be on the lookout if you’re interested.
Sometimes I wonder how I end up on some of these shows…The hosts are way smarter than me. Very, very cool, and I was very, very humbled.
ALSO, an opportunity came up to do something that has been on my bucket list for a very, very long time—the opportunity to give a TED Talk (!!). I came up with an idea for a talk that I hope the audition panel will like. I even had to record an audition. Wish me luck, y’all!
As my dad always says, “all they can do is say no.” Even if I fail, I win because I now know the process and can make a pitch again in the future.
This is a big deal for me because I RARELY pitch people about anything. I’ve built a pretty significant business over the years by making people come to me. The only other time I hard pitched for something was for my speech at 20BooksVegas. Other than that, I just keep my head down and do my thing.
Anyhoo, how’s that for Amnesia Mode? Basically, I get to put EVERYTHING I’VE LEARNED ABOUT COPYWRITING SO FAR to the test in pitching my talk. If it works, I’ve done a few things right and will share some of the secrets with you all. If not, I will share some of the secrets with you all (LOL).
LESSON LEARNED: In speaking with Alex on his show, he took the time to explain a concept he uses at his marketing agency when they approach copywriting—it has to do with the 6 Human Desires (as posed by Tony Robbins):
- Certainty
- Uncertainty
- Significance
- Connection/Love
- Growth
- Contribution
Pick a desire, and pair it with one (or more) of the 3 major goals of content:
- Educate
- Entertain
- Inspire
And you have an interesting approach to copywriting. Hmm, got some gears turning. Very, very cool to see how a copywriter with a neuroscience background approaches marketing.
LESSON EXECUTED:
Anyhoo, I used his advice in preparing my TED Talk application. I also used advice from a book I read last year called The 3-Minute Rule that is basically the best guide I’ve ever read to pitching anything.
It’s good to put the concepts I’m learning in Amnesia Mode into action so soon.
We’ll see what happens.
Stay safe out there.
MARKETING PARKING LOT (oh boy, it’s growing):
- Clean up old lead magnet links and redirect them. ROI: Could add a few more subscribers to my list per year.
- Convert unnecessary links in my nonfiction to footnotes to improve “reader stickiness.”
- Zero in on any broken links and redirect them. ROI: Improves user experience on my website.
